He kisses his daughter goodnight and danger is "flickering like heat lightning around the stuffed toys, filling up that cosy little bedroom like poison gas". Frank stands in his parents' living room during a wake and realises the murderer is present, someone in the room, and it starts to feel "underlit and threatening, shadows piled up too thick in the corners", as the booze continues to flow and the mourners keep on singing. Suddenly, everything Frank has told himself over the years is thrown into doubt.ĭarkness, tragedy and danger creep and crawl through this novel, not on a grand scale but on a chillingly believable, everyday one. Or just read this if you like good books. Or read this if you really enjoyed Let the Right One In and want to see the author’s take on the zombie genre after (successfully and awesomely) attacking the vampire genre. What happens when people’s loved ones come back to life, rise from their graves, and then return home? Read this book if you feel like what your zombie books are missing is a thoughtful examination of grief and loss. It would be a crime to leave it off this list. I mentioned this book as a great option for a genre book in translation, if you’re doing the Read Harder Challenge, but I’m mentioning it again here because I just really enjoyed this one. handling the undead by John Ajvide Lindqvist All of this might sound like traditional zombie fodder, but it Colson Whitehead’s capable hands, the typical zombie story is taken in new and thought-provoking directions. Teams of civilians, including our protagonist Mark Spitz, are tasked with getting rid of these infected squatters, but of course things don’t end up going according to plan. The uninfected try to build back the civilization that existed before the plague in Zone One (located in Manhattan), but groups of infected still lurk around their island. In this post-apocalyptic world, citizens have been divided into two categories: the infected and the uninfected. 5/13/2023 0 Comments Cougar by Alan RabinowitzJaguars once roamed widely from the south-western United States to Argentina, but have lost nearly half of their natural territory and have disappeared altogether from some countries. "Amerindians are very keen on being part of the project," she said from the capital of Georgetown. That means that preserving grasslands are as important to conservation of jaguars as protecting the dense rainforests, they say.Įvi Paemelaere, a Belgian jaguar scientist with Panthera, said villagers in remote spots in Guyana have helped her set up cameras along the roads and hunting trails that the big cats like to travel on. Scientists reported finding a relatively healthy jaguar density of three to four animals per 161 miles in Guyana's southern Rupununi savannah. The South American nation, with some of the region's least spoiled wilderness, joins Colombia and nations in central America in recognising the corridor and agreeing to work towards the long-term conservation of jaguars, according to Esteban Payan, regional director for Panthera's northern South America jaguar program.Ī network of cameras equipped with motion sensors and fixed to tree trunks has revealed tantalising glimpses of sleek, solitary jaguars slinking through Guyana's dense rainforests and vast grasslands stretching to the country's border with Brazil. 5/13/2023 0 Comments Hot as sin by bella andreI couldn’t sit at home without knowing how you were doing, without seeing you for myself. But when her eyes suddenly softened and she unclamped her jaw, he found himself adding, “Connor told me about your accident and I was worried about you. “I needed to make sure you were okay.” He wasn’t saying anything she couldn’t have figured out for herself and he didn’t feel as if he was giving away a deep dark secret. Didn’t she realize he hadn’t had any other choice but to get on the next plane to Colorado? That hearing about her accident had sent him into a tailspin, into his own head-on collision with the past? He’d never been one for telling lies. He was surprised by the heat beneath her words, the unspoken accusation that he shouldn’t have come-and that she didn’t want him here. “WHAT ARE you doing here, Sam?” He didn’t know how he’d expected her to react to his showing up unannounced, but given the sparkling jewels on her fingers and ears he’d have bet on cold and distant, that he was merely one of the many peons coming to worship at her feet. 5/13/2023 0 Comments Imagined communities meaningMary Louise Pratt’s “Arts of the Contact Zone” was first presented in 1990 as the keynote address at the Responsibilities for Literacy conference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. HeinleinClarke are often considered the "Big Three" of English-language science fiction authors. He was one of the best-selling science-fiction novelists for many decades, and he, Isaac Asimov, and Arthur C. Heinlein became one of the first American science-fiction writers to break into mainstream magazines such as The Saturday Evening Post in the late 1940s. His work continues to have an influence on the science-fiction genre, and on modern culture more generally. His plots often posed provocative situations which challenged conventional social mores. His published works, both fiction and non-fiction, express admiration for competence and emphasize the value of critical thinking. Sometimes called the "dean of science fiction writers", he was among the first to emphasize scientific accuracy in his fiction, and was thus a pioneer of the subgenre of hard science fiction. Robert Anson Heinlein ( / ˈ h aɪ n l aɪ n/ J– May 8, 1988) was an American science fiction author, aeronautical engineer, and naval officer. Linda blogs beautifully and informatively over at TeacherDance, and she says that blogging has helped her to think more about her writing as reading others' work gives her new ideas and new learning along with new friends. Linda has kept journals for most of her life, and she has written many poems and prose pieces just because she loves to write. Today I am so pleased to host literacy coach Linda Baie along with three of her student poets. What places do you want to exist? Then.give them existence in your writing! And I can't wait to see the drawer where milkweed seeds keep all of our wishes! Think about your life. What places do you imagine might exist in the hidden worlds of fantasy? I will one day visit the Mountain of Lost Socks to find that favorite green wool one I lost. You can read a bit about déjà vu here at HowStuffWorks, but you will see that it is still a bit mysterious for everybody. It's that feeling, the feeling that you've already done something. In case you do not know the expression, déjà vu means already seen in French. Would I choose to watch my life before living it? Probably not. I like the idea of a place where you could watch your whole life unfold. For a while now, I have been writing poems about all sorts of imaginary places, and this make believe theatre is one of my favorites. Students - This poem is about an imaginary place. 5/12/2023 0 Comments Dragons of spring dawningSalvade got through the rest of the inning and got through a scoreless second inning to hold the game to 1-0, but when the third came around, the Lions began to attack.
